Deep within the rugged landscapes near Sintra, long before castles and palaces crowned its hills, colossal creatures roamed the land. Hidden beneath layers of time, their presence lingers - not in legends or myths, but in stone. Sintra is home to one of Portugal’s most astonishing prehistoric secrets: real dinosaur footprints, frozen in time for millions of years.

A Journey to the Past

Nestled along the coastline near Cabo da Roca, these fossilized tracks offer a glimpse into a world untouched by human hands. Dating back to the Jurassic period - over 150 million years ago - these footprints were left by massive creatures that once ruled the Earth. Scientists believe the tracks belong to sauropods, enormous, long-necked dinosaurs that could grow over 30 meters in length. As these ancient giants walked along what was once a muddy, prehistoric landscape, their heavy steps left deep impressions, later preserved by nature’s own hand.

Where Time Stands Still

One of the most impressive locations to witness these footprints is the Praia Grande cliffs, where you can see an extraordinary vertical rock face marked with over a hundred dinosaur tracks. These ancient traces weren’t discovered until modern times, when erosion gradually revealed the patterns hidden within the stone. Some tracks appear to move in a straight line, suggesting a herd once passed through, leaving behind their silent testimony.

The Mystery of the Giants

While science tells us these tracks belong to dinosaurs, local folklore spins its own tales. Some say the footprints were left by gigantic mythological creatures, while others believe they mark the path of ancient deities who once roamed the land. Whatever the truth may be, one thing is certain - standing before these prehistoric marks, you can’t help but feel the weight of time pressing down, a reminder of a world long lost.

Sintra may be known for its palaces and legends, but beneath its surface lies a different kind of magic - one that predates even human history. If Sintra’s fairytale castles are windows into the past, then these footprints are portals into a time before time, when giants walked the Earth.
